Inquiring Minds

SummerWhat happens when you select five talented medical students, undergraduates and high school students with a passion for medicine, give them hands-on laboratory experience, and provide them with the challenges of scientific inquiry and discovery?

We put last year's summer research fellows to the test. The outcome: pathways to careers in medicine.

"Everyone was really supportive; they helped me decide to pursue a nursing career," explains Erin Cheser, a sophomore at Indiana Wesleyan University. Equally charged by their experience were Brook Helmer, a pre-med college senior and Lisa Norfleet who is enjoying her second year in medical school.

Alisa Funke, a second year medical student at U of L, gained new insight into medical research and refined her skills. "Research requires patience and perseverance; you must be able to repeat the results before you can make a connection."

A former summer fellow, Tracy McAuliffe was so enthusiastic about her experience that she returned the Section of Colon & Rectal Surgery as a research associate in 2002. During her tenure, she received a student research grant from the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of America. Now entering her third year at U of L's School of Medicine, McAuliffe says, "I feel like I've only just begun."
