Making a Difference

Erin
Erin Cheser aids refugees in the capitol city of Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

The roller coaster of ulcerative colitis -- frequent hospitalizations, missed school, and surgeries -- reminds Erin Cheser, 19, to keep her eyes on the prize. "I try to make every day count," says Cheser who was diagnosed with colitis at age six.

In 2001, Cheser traveled with her church on a 10-day mission to Phnom Penh, Cambodia. During her stay, she taught health and hygiene classes to elementary school students. Cheser also helped care for some 3,000 refugees in a makeshift medical clinic. The experience inspired her to pursue a nursing career at Indiana Wesleyan University.

What advice would she give to kids with Crohn's or colitis? "Follow your dreams!"
