Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a collective term for Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis—two chronic, intestinal illnesses with similar symptoms and complications.

IBD affects an estimated 1.4 million Americans.

This year, 30,000 people will learn they suffer from Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis.

Ten to 20 percent of those afflicted develop symptoms before the age of 18.

Approximately, 20 percent of patients have another family member with IBD, and families frequently share a similar pattern of disease.
