A. Objectives
To understand the theoretical basis for the use of chemotherapy in the treatment of malignant diseases, the role of clinical trials in evaluating chemotherapy efficacy and the current standards for the use of chemotherapy to treat anal, rectal and colon cancer.
B. Structure of Activities
Under the supervision of Dr. Shawn Glisson, the resident will participate in the evaluation and treatment of patients with malignant diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus.
C. Competencies
1. Patient Care
  • Develop patient care plans relating to chemotherapy for malignant diseases of the small bowel, colon, rectum and anus

  • Demonstrate clinical judgment
2. Medical Knowledge
     a. Fund of knowledge
  • Adjuvant therapy vs. treating metastatic disease

  • Clinical trials related to colon and rectal cancer treatment

  • Standard treatments for colon and rectal cancer, anal canal cancer

  • Familiarity with standard drugs and toxicity

  • Knowledge of appropriate long term followup strategies

  • Knowledge of other potential uses of chemotherapy, e.g., hyperthermia intraperitoneal
     b. Conference attendance as applicable

     c. Collateral reading


3. Practice-based learning and improvement
  • Knowledge of evidence-based medicine

  • Critique outcomes (M&M Conference)
